چکیده

In this work, we present the design, fabrication, and characterization of a surface-normal plasmonic modulator using sub-wavelength metal grating. The device consists of a 1.77 μm efficiently poled electro-optic polymer film, which is sandwiched between a plasmonic grating and an indium–tin oxide film. A strong Fano resonance with a sharp plasmonic bandgap at 1522 nm wavelength was observed and electro-optical modulation was demonstrated based on the refractive index modulation of the polymer film. With future improvement in lowering the driving voltage and increasing the modulation depth, this hybrid organic/plasmonic modulator can readily expand into modulator arrays for three dimensional optical interconnects. & 2015 Elsevier B.V. Adjustable Plasmonic Bandgap in One-Dimensional Nanograting Based on Localized and Propagating Surface Plasmons

Compared to the long history of plasmonic gratings, there are only a few studies regarding the bandgap in the propagation of plasmonic surface waves. Considering the previous studies on interpretation of plasmonic bandgap formation, we discuss this phenomenon using the effect of both surface plasmon polariton (SPP) and localized surface plasmon (LSP) for our fabricated one-dimensional metallic-...

Nonlinear plasmonics: controlling light with light

Many scientists believe that the future of signal processing and computing lies not within electronics but in the field of subwavelength optics. Controlling light at sub-wavelength scales, forbidden by traditional far-field optics, relies on surface plasmon techniques. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are electromagnetic waves that exist on the surface of metals such as gold or silver. The int...

Optimal Structure of a Plasmonic Chip for Sensitive Bio-Detection with the Grating-Coupled Surface Plasmon-Field Enhanced Fluorescence (GC-SPF)

Surface plasmon field-enhanced fluorescence (SPF) has been one of the powerful tools for biosensors and bioimaging. A wavelength-scale periodic structure coated with a thin metal film is called a plasmonic chip, and it can provide SPF. SPF of Cy5-streptavidin (Cy5-SA) was measured on a biotinylated plasmonic chip with a grating of 480 nm-pitch. The optimal structure of a plasmonic sensor-chip w...

Light modulation with electro-optic polymer-based resonant grating waveguide structures.

A novel modulator design incorporating an E-O polymer into a resonant grating waveguide structure is presented. Using purely polymeric material we developed a resonant grating waveguide structure having low loss and high finesse, with approximately 2nm spectral line width at 1.55 mum. An externally applied voltage modulates the refractive index of the E-O waveguide, thereby shifting the resonan...

Mesoporous sol-gel silica cladding for hybrid TiO2/electro-optic polymer waveguide modulators.

We report the efficient poling of an electro-optic (EO) polymer in a hybrid TiO(2)/electro-optic polymer multilayer waveguide modulator on mesoporous sol-gel silica cladding. The mesoporous sol-gel silica has nanometer-sized pores and a low refractive index of 1.24, which improves mode confinement in the 400-nm-thick EO polymer film in the modulators and prevents optical absorption from the low...
